PAINTING POETRY

“Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks,"
said the classical Greek lyric poet Simonides of Ceos. But how can we capture the essence of poetry in our paintings? In this workshop, where no calligraphy experience is needed, we will explore the use of abstract calligraphic marks to make paintings that are inspired by poetry. We will work with the gestures of letters, flourishes, use of different tools and materials, as well as inward reflection to begin our paintings. The more we can listen to our intuitive self, the more honest, powerful and alive our paintings will be.

Using poetry as our starting point, we will discuss how abstract paintings can have an intrinsic connection to a poem. This includes the quality of line, size of strokes, shapes, direction of energy, color, value and texture. We will use sumi ink and watercolor to do exercises in calligraphic mark making, asemic writing, choosing colors, value studies and cropping the page.

If you are interested in looking for new inspiration for your abstract paintings, if you enjoy poetry, if you want to have fun and make exciting discoveries, then this is the class for you. You will leave with some finished paintings and ideas for more.

5 of 5 Excellent Workshop! January 31, 2018
Reviewer: Mary Gow from CA United States
I've admired Sherrie's work since I first saw her work in a show in San Francisco. Attending Sherrie's Calligraphic Abstractions Workshop was perhaps the biggest treat to my creative self in years! Excellent instruction from Sherrie, who offers a balance of demos with time to create. (And the ability to hear some of her profound poetry too!) I got so much inspiration from the two days! Plus my paintings look more alive! I'm eager to continue with what I learned about using the folded pen, the wooden veneer tool, gold leafing, a variety of new brushes, adding accent marks, using cropping tools and assembling hand-bound books! I hope you don't miss a chance to learn from Sherrie!

5 of 5 Calligraphic Abstractions January 31, 2018
Reviewer: Cheryl Cahn from Berkeley, CA United States
I recently attended a workshop by Sherrie Lovler in Sebastopol. The experience was very uplifting and fun. Not only is Sherrie a talented and inspiring artist but she is a very grounded and generous human being. Her exercises were challenging and enjoyable.  Her directions were clear and concise. Her methods and personality inspired friendship amongst the participants. And Sherrie went the extra mile to research and provide information on our individual questions and concerns. A fringe benefit was reading Sherrie's beautiful poems that accompany her art. If you want to have a good time and feel positive about your self expression, I recommend that you contact Sherrie. Thank you, Cheryl Cahn
