On Softer Ground
by Sherrie Lovler

Gold medal winner for Most Outstanding Book Design from Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPYs) 2016.

A beautifully printed book of 24 paintings and poems.
A rare treasure.

From the introduction:
"This book is the culmination of a seven-year artistic journey. It began with the thought that creativity is an opening, a gateway into the realm where a life force greater than I am joins with me to create. I actively sought this connection and found that painting and poetry were my doorway into that place. With this intention, I set up a practice twice a week to keep me focused on this work."

From the back cover:
"The classical Greek lyric poet Simonides of Ceos wrote that 'Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks.' His uncanny insight is borne out, page spread by page spread, in Sherrie Lovler's new book, On Softer Ground, where her paintings are poetic, and her poems are painterly, and silence speaks in hushed tones of awe and wonder."
– Phil Cousineau, author of The Art of Pilgrimage and The Painted Word

Description Dimensions The Words
On Softer Ground invites readers on a journey of beauty and transformation. Twenty-four paintings and poems illuminate the magnificent possibilities of creation. The line, movement and free-flowing strokes of calligraphy are the foundation for the paintings. The poems, informed by spirit and nature, evoke a deep appreciation of life, presence and wonder. Together, they inspire readers to see and feel the world anew.

Sherrie offers insight into her deeply personal genesis of painting and poetry. In sharing her experience, she opens a gateway to the sweetness and joy of creativity for readers to discover within themselves.

Having received a gift of Sherrie Lovler's book a few years ago, I enjoyed it so much that I decided it would also be a great book to buy for a couple of my friends as birthday gifts. As a fledgling calligrapher, her book of paintings and poetry provide me with inspiration to continue my study of the art.

This is a beautiful book of paintings, poems and calligraphy of Sherrie Lovler.  I have seen her works before and have always been amazed at how this art just seems to "flow" from Sherrie.  It's just who she is.  In addition, the quality of the publication, does justice to the quality of the artist.

Sherrie, since I am the recipient of this beautiful book, Roger and I thought I should write the review.  It is an exquisite collection of poems and paintings.  We read it together after dinner, one poem at a time, so we can savor both the words and the art.  It is a delicious dessert!  Thank you. Linda

Sherrie, I was recently introduced to your work by two friends in a Zoom discussion group  (Carol Walls and Mary Lou Sherman). Your website is captivating and inspiring. Your poetry in combination with your lovely art work deeply resonates, and both my husband and I are enjoying your book displayed on our coffee table. Your book cover is beautifully calming and inviting, and we have been discussing your work, page by page. Your poetry reflects much of our own thinking as we continue to negotiate our path through these troubled times. We feel blessed to be in a tribe of artists who strive to focus on the positives and beauty to be found in each day. In my mid-seventies, a retired special education teacher, I am a 'late bloomer in the garden of calligraphy and book arts'--about eight years experience now, but my daily practice and connections with kindred spirit artists has been a lifeline these past months. Thank you for being part of my inspiration! I love your work! Diana
